Far Flung Flowers Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery

At Chestnut Nursery we pride ourselves on growing well known, tried and tested

varieties as well as the more unusual.

When we talk about exotics we imagine tender large leaved plants, but most of the accepted traditional varieties of shrubs,

herbaceous perennials and annual bedding have some very far fl ung origins. Take for example pelargoniums, better known as geraniums, they originate from South Africa. Therefore, if we are all unwittingly growing lots of exotic plants with success then why not try something really outstanding!

The red abyssinian banana, Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’, is from Ethiopia, where it’s grown as a food source. In the UK it’s prized as a dramatic garden specimen, with richly red coloured large leaves. Best grown in a pot, it can easily romp to 2m high in one summer. Be sure to move it into a greenhouse or conservatory when nights get frosty.

Canna lilies from South Africa, although not actually related to lilies, are vibrant easy to grow perennials that produce bold leaves and showy fl owers in shades of red, orange, yellows and pinks. They are ideal for both containers and borders and with a little mulching, in our temperate southern climate, can be left in the ground over winter.

If you’ve taken a trip to Poole Park recently, you hopefully noticed our Tower of Jewels also called Echium pininana (pictured). Growing at the park’s eastern entrance, incredible blue fl ower spikes arise to a lofty four metres tall.

For more information on our wonderful far fl ung fl owers, please pay us a visit – the nursery is bristling with healthy plants.
