Springdale First School News

The recent fi ne weather has made returning to school even more pleasurable after the Easter break. During the Summer Term there are so many opportunities for the children to learn outdoors and the children are looking forward to off site visits as part of their topics.

Year 4 children have just returned from a residential visit to Leeson House, where they learnt a great deal about the environment, habitats and animal life in that area. They also learnt a lot about team work and what it is like to be in an unfamiliar situation. The children’s behaviour was exemplary and it was a pleasure to be with them.

We are delighted that, thanks to fundraising, a new covered outdoor classroom has been created for our Year 2 children. Over the coming weeks this will have lots of exciting resources put in to make it a great place to learn.

Our youngest children (Foundation Stage) thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a sponsored bike and scooter ride. Their confi dence was incredible and many really sped around the course! As a result of this event, there will be new resources purchased for the Foundation Stage outdoor area.

Rock Challenge Success Ensures Corfe Hills School Remains in Premier Division for 2018

dance created for the audition process. The theme was sensitively captured and Rebecca showed great professionalism and dedication throughout the whole process, from the auditions to running the rehearsals, right through to the Showcase in Bournemouth Pavilion in February and fi nally at the Guildhall in Portsmouth in April.

Corfe Hills School secured fourth place in the Southern Premier Final of Rock Challenge in Portsmouth on 29 April, battling against schools from across Dorset, Hampshire, West Sussex, Buckinghamshire, London and the Isle of Wight, including specialist dance schools. This was a fantastic achievement and testament to the commitment and talent of our students and staff.

The Premier Final is reserved for the competition’s top-achieving teams and the success at this year’s competition secures Corfe Hills a continued place in the Premier Division of Rock Challenge for 2018.

The performance was entitled The Hero Lies Within and was based on the London 7/7 bombings and was completely student led. Our choreographer for 2017 was Rebecca Collins and she did nothing short of impress with her intricate

Corfe Hills also won awards seven other awards on the night, including Stage Crew, Performance Skills, Entertainment, Stage Use, Choreography, Set Design and Video.

Students took on roles as Heads of Admin, set, costume, hair and make-up. These students have weekly meetings to discuss progress and to set targets for the week ahead. We believe this is what makes Corfe Hills’ Rock Challenge so exciting and so enriching for our students. It is an opportunity that they can grasp with both hands. As well as ensuring all aspects of the creation are running smoothly, our students plan and hold fundraisers to help fund our entry. Although our students are extremely dedicated to fundraising, Rock Challenge would not be possible without the help of the CHSA and we are extremely grateful and cannot thank them enough for their support.

opportunities; an example is that our Foundation Stage children, along with our Eco-Club, will be ‘throwing and growing’ with Seedboms. These will be created by the children from kits and will be used to spread wild fl ower seeds in the school grounds – no doubt the children will love seeing the fl owers grow over the summer.

Understanding how to be safe online is crucially important for our children as they access the internet so readily and in a range of ways. It was a pleasure to welcome a team from the Halifax Building Society, who led an assembly for our Year 1 and 2 children to promote online safety (which is also called digital wellbeing). Working with professionals from areas outside of school really helps to get important messages across to the children and we are very grateful for their time.

Our ‘Summer Sizzler’ (June 16th – 4.30 to 7.30pm) will be fi nal celebration for our 50th anniversary and promise to be enormous fun (see pg75). All are welcome to come along. Entrance will be via the Lewesdon Drive gate of the school. Please join us!
