Founded in 1851 by Walter Hicks, a born and bred Cornishman, St Austell Brewery has opened its doors for visitors to share the passion of Hicks and the brewery’s rich
history. Still remaining completely
independent and family owned, the brewery employs over 1,000 people across the brewing, distribution, head office functions and the 25 managed pubs, making St Austell Brewery one of Cornwall’s largest employers. Since Hicks founded St Austell
Brewery over 160 years ago, brewing fine ales has been at the heart of the business. As you arrive, you can’t miss the Victorian Tower that looks out over St Austell Bay, brewing award-winning ales across the South West and throughout the UK. Since 1851, St Austell Brewery has produced nearly 1 billion pints! As we walked through the doors
of the brewery, we were greeted with a friendly welcome from Roy, who offered us a free taste of his favourite ale whilst we waited for the tour to begin.

area where we learnt about the key fundamentals of making the perfect brew. We then made our way through to the museum area to read about the history of the brewery, and then finally to the working factory distribution centre – all extremely informative and interesting. The tour finished after about an hour with a sampling session where we tried a variety of ales… they tasted even better having known the process and the passion that had gone into each bottle and cask! Before we left, and included in the admission price, we picked a bottle of ale each from the gift shop to take home, our favourites were ‘Tribute’, and ‘Proper Job’. If you’re looking to grab a bite to eat,
make sure you visit The Hicks Bar, the food looked amazing and is a great area to relax and enjoy the ale on offer. Priced at £12, overall the experience
is great value for money and guaranteed to quench your thirst!
