tained by the Museum. Specialist sub-contractors were due to start dismantling the Hangar as the Bulletin went to press, with the structure being sent to South Wales for restoration, before returning for re-erection later in the year.

The contractors for the exhibition fit-out are to be chosen shortly, with this phase of the project due to begin in June next year. We are still on target to open the new Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed in late Summer 2017 with a formal opening in September. The Finishing Straight repairs are

due to take place in the first part of next year, with a formal re-opening of the Straight on 17th June 2017, the 110th anniversary of the opening of the Track.

Conservation work on aircraft and other display artefacts will continue in the Flight Shed and other areas of the Museum over the next few months, with work due to start shortly on a Vanguard cockpit mock-up that has just returned to the Museum from long term storage in Sussex. Valerie Mills

CAR RIDES – AND A TRIBUTE TO RICHARD ANDREWS

T

he role of the Car Rides Team at Brooklands could best be described as

‘edutainment’.

We provide a moving tableaux of the sights, sounds and smells of the Track, allowing the visitors to relive a little of the atmosphere of the period by taking them up the Test Hill and along the Banking.

For some, it is a lifelong dream come true, for others a thrilling day out but along the way we aim to raise significant funds for the Museum.

We are told time and time again that what Update

makes it such a special time is the ‘in-car infotainment’ as the drivers and marshals bring Brooklands alive with stories of the Track in its heyday. They hear of the characters, places, cars and motorcycles, the races and the social, technical and racing history, of the circuit.

Styles vary – some team members are a little flamboyant, others quietly capable, but all deliver an unforgettable experience according to our Comments Book.

Volunteer Richard Andrews and his green NG have been stalwarts of our team for many years.
