The first of the 200hp cars. On 8th November 1909 took records including the World Land Speed record at Brooklands driven by Victor Hémery. At the Easter meeting in 1922 entered by R F Cooper for Louis Zborowski to drive. Parts (including the gearbox) used in the ‘Higham Special’ which still exists as the ex-Parry Thomas car ‘Babs’.
1912, 200hp RE, N/A, 9141, N/A In 1913 and 1914 Hornsted took records in this car at Brooklands. Also driven on the Track by H V Barlow and John Duff. Engine 9141 is in Bill Evans’ ‘Blitzen Benz’ re-creation which was at the Brooklands Centenary
and at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
1912, 200hp RE, HOM 841, 13280, N/A The last of six REs and the only long-wheelbase
four-seater. Probably tested at Brooklands by Bruno Roberts in 1920 and driven on the Track by Hornsted in 1921. By 1928 Dudley Froy, G K Clowes and Dudley Watt had also driven the 200hp Benz, followed in 1929-30 by C D Wallbank, Alistair Miller, H W Purdy, Cyril Paul and P Bamber. Restored by Brian Morgan, for many years in the Museum of Science & Industry in Birmingham when owned by the Murcott family. Now with George Wingard in the USA, ran at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
