HISTORICS LATE SUMMER STUNNER

News

1934 Bentley tourer.

T

here may have been jitters in some quarters about Brexit causing an unsettling effect on the UK classic car market, but there were certainly no signs of a generic slow-down at the Museum on Saturday 20th August as Historics at Brooklands scored an emphatic 84 per cent sale rate on 150 fine classics, with a gross return over £2.8 million. A very varied consignment list greeted the capacity audience, with an encouraging number of first-timers. Consignments covered 10 decades, with 52 different marques represented, a wide range of values to suit all depths of pocket, 43 motor cars at no reserve and a fine sprinkling of classic motorcycles, many highly affordable. A total of 126 classics changed ownership on the day, including a new owner for a 1996 Brooklands Bentley who, having completed the transaction at £11,200 and collected the keys, immediately set off for a stately and supremely elegant drive to Aberdeenshire. Not so fortunate was the bidder in Australia who was pipped to the post on the purchase of a superbly-presented 1979 Porsche 911/930 Turbo in Martini colours which changed hands for £38,000. Preceding the sale, there were two very buoyant

preview days on 18th and 19th August, with record numbers attending Historics’ free ‘How to Buy and Sell at Auction’ seminars, and on sale day itself a downpour immediately preceding the first lot failed to deter those attending. Strong, competitive bidding was the order of the day in the hall, on the telephone and on-line

where, interestingly, this sale attracted the highest number of registered on-line bidders from 18 countries, including a major increase in interest from the USA. Total on-line bids placed numbered 338.

Sale highlights included: • Vigorous bidding on a 2002 Mini Cooper S, previously owned by Madonna, boiled down to a two-bidder battle that lifted the sale price to £22,400.

• A 1963 Ford Cortina Mk 1 1500GT, driven an average of one mile per day throughout its life, sold for £26,680.

• A left-hand-drive 1963 Austin Healey 3000
