On Saturday the organisers were delighted to welcome the remaining Dutch 320 Squadron with the crew from the Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight in their B25 Mitchell Bomber. It was an emotional and heart-warming moment when 97-year-old André Hissink, 94- year-old Edward Hoenson, 92-year-old Eduard Jacob and 90-year-old Camille Stritzko visited the Mitchell. The Surrey and Sussex Wing Air Cadets welcomed the Dutch veterans to their marquee with a guard of honour and pipe-band salute.

ou need an adventurous spirit to be the Chairman of the Brooklands Museum Trust and Sir Gerald Acher had certainly proved that when he took part in what must be the most gru- elling of long-distance rallies – the Peking to Paris in 1997. The origins of this event can be traced back to 1907 when a challenge was thrown down in the Paris Le Matin newspaper stating ‘What needs to be proved today is that as long as a man has a car, he can do anything and go anywhere. Is there anyone who will undertake to travel this summer from Peking to Paris by automobile?’ Five cars eventually took up the cudgels and started from Peking on a journey of some 9,317 miles in early motor cars across inhospitable landscapes that frequently had no form of road at

known as he stood atop a troop carrier as part of the military vehicle parade and made other appearances on the Museum stand, which as usual was in the centre of the arena. The Museum was pleased to be supported by the Brooklands Trust Members’ Outreach stand with an eclectic display of cars.


This year the event welcomed 25,000 visitors, which was lower than anticipated, but it nonethe- less delivered another outstanding variety of class acts that entertained everyone who attended. Steve Castle and Paul Stewart
