BTM TALKS NEWS

t’s difficult to believe we are now in the final few dimming days of 2016 and for me and the team it’s been quite a year! Giacomo Agostini, Brian Redman and Patrick Tambay have all graced us with their presence during the Motor Sport Legends talks series. In prospect we have the Hunt@40 event (25th October) and an evening with David Richards CBE and Steve Cropley (27th October), two evenings not to be missed!

I

I make no apology for the month of October being so busy as many of our guest speakers have very busy diary schedules and I just have to accept times when they are free.

The year started with the sad news of the loss of Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Melrose-Brown RN in February, a loss not only for us at Brooklands, but for the world. I mentioned in a previous Bulletin that we had planned an event in early 2017 to mark the first year since his passing. Well, we have now confirmed the event as ‘Brooklands Remembers Captain Eric Melrose- Brown RN’, and it will take place on the afternoon on Sunday 19th February in the Napier Room. We have a number of guests lined up to take part, including Paul Beaver, Eric’s biographer, Eric’s son Glenn and Emily Horton, the last journalist to interview Eric. We are also in the process of inviting present day test pilots from BAE and Boeing to compare and contrast Eric’s life as a test pilot to theirs. This will be a free of charge, ticket only event, with any pro- ceeds going to the Fleet Air Arm and Brooklands Museum Trust. Tickets will be made available from 2nd January 2017.

Looking forwards to the New Year, on Thursday 5th January we will kick off with an evening with James ‘Mac’ Hulbert talking about the ERA R4D, the most developed ERA.

So, the remaining dates for 2016 and on to 2017 are as follows:

25th October Hunt@40, an evening to reflect on 40 years since James Hunt won the Formula One World Championship.

27th October David Richards CBE in conversation with Steve Cropley.

30th October (Sunday) Lunch with Di

Spires, author of I Just Made the Tea, as she recalls her experiences running F1 team motorhomes.

11 2017

5th January ERA R4D with James ‘Mac’ Hulbert.

Family Talk (to be advised).

16th February Patrick Wood, Surrey Small Satellites Ltd.

19th February Brooklands Remembers Captain Eric Melrose-Brown.

16th March Motor Sport Legends series – John McGuiness and James Whitham in conversation with Steve Parrish. Conquering the Mountain, the Isle of Man TT (to be confirmed).

23rd March The Story of the Hawker Siddeley HS 121 Trident airliner, Neil Lomax.

20th April Harry Sherrard – taking part in 30 years of motor sport.

18th May John Reaks. The 1990 Benetton B190 F1 car.

15th June Group Captain Marcus Wills, VC10 and Queens Flight pilot.

Finally, just a reminder of the ticket booking arrangements and start times. All talks, unless otherwise stated, start at 7.30pm and take place in the Napier Room. Food and drinks available from 6.00pm in the Members’ Bar. Tickets for the Classic Talks are available from Yvette Bolton, talks@brooklandsmembers.co.uk or 07880 670359.

Tickets for the Motor Sport Legends series can be obtained by going directly to the BTM website or via the BTM office on 01932 857381 extension 226.

Finally, I mentioned earlier that the former Ferrari F1 driver Patrick Tambay was our guest, along with Motor Sport’s Simon Taylor on the evening of 14th September.

Patrick had travelled from the south of France just to be with us at Brooklands, his first visit. Those members and guests lucky enough to be present witnessed a remarkable evening with a remarkable man. From being on top of his game in the 1980s with Ferrari to now being affected by Parkinson’s disease, Patrick was just amazing and inspiring and I have no doubt that he will have made a lasting impression on the audience. To finish, he took time to sign over 50 books and photographs.

From all of us, Patrick, thank you. Steve Clarke and the Talks Team
