Tunbridge Wells school wins Young Enterprise Company West Kent Final
A group of 16 to 17-year-old students from Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys is busy UpCycling as part of a Young Enterprise Company activity. This not-for-profi t education charity aims to ‘inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise’. The boys have created a business called UpRAW, adopting the process known as UpCycling – a method that converts used materials into something useful. UpRAW uses wooden pallets that would have otherwise been discarded and recycles them into useful items such as bird boxes, key and coat hooks, wine racks and even garden chairs. UpRAW participated in the regional fi nals of the competition, giving a four- minute formal presentation to an audience of around 300 people. The company won the regional company of the year award for the most innovative product and were also awarded the Finance Cup and the most innovative product award. UpRAW beat eight other businesses including teams from Kent College, Walthamstow Hall, Tonbridge Grammar and Weald of Kent. It was commended on an excellent presentation, animated advert, company report and stall.
EXPANSION FOR SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL
Parents have welcomed plans to expand a Tunbridge Wells school that caters for children with severe special educational needs including autism. Oakley School teaches children with learning diffi culties and has identifi ed a need to increase its intake.
The school would also like to provide occupational therapy and physiotherapy in order to help pupils learn to cope with various communication, behaviour and concentration problems. Pupils are encouraged to communicate and expand their capabilities through music, art and drama and they also grow vegetables during practical skills sessions. The plans, backed by Kent County Council, include a larger car park, multi-sensory classrooms and a therapy room. The majority of work is hoped to take place during the summer holiday.
