AT THE FOREFRONT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Belfast Metropolitan College is the largest single provider of vocational education and training in Northern Ireland meeting the educational and training needs of a diverse range of individuals, companies and communities in the greater Belfast area.

The college recognises the significance of further education, vocational training and lifelong learning in promoting social development through their curriculum and work closely with Invest NI and the Department for Employment and Learning. This ensures our engagements with industry are aligned with strategies to embed key economic policy, developing the college’s capability to be a driver for local, sub-regional and regional development, collaborating with key stakeholders to provide a flexible approach to skills demands.

WIND SECTOR SKILLS REQUIREMENT In support of the burgeoning wind sector skills requirement, Belfast Metropolitan College and B9 Energy combined their industrial and academic expertise to provide a training environment that promotes the development of wind energy skills and knowledge.

UNIQUE COLLABORATION This unique and dynamic collaboration began in 2011 with Belfast Met formulating the development of a three phase strategy to meet projected recruitment demands in the short, medium and long term. B9 Energy, the largest independent operator of wind farms across the UK and Ireland, with 49 sites and 750 turbines under contract, recognised the added value of formally accrediting technical training and staff development.

The strategic training programmes, aligned to B9 Energy operations deliver a robust quality assurance system, demonstrates the competence of their workforce and provides confidence to existing and potential clients in their ability to meet contractual obligations.

B9 Energy is proactive in working with engineering staff from Belfast Metropolitan College to produce training programmes that integrate and emulate the key elements of wind turbine technology, while Belfast Metropolitan College engineering staff complete all relevant health and safety training and spend significant periods of industrial secondment with B9 Energy technicians, to fully understand the challenges faced by wind operatives.
