SPOTLIGHT ON IRELAND

ENERGY COMPANY LEADS THE WAY

Established in 1992, B9 Energy has been at the leading edge of the wind industry, both in the UK and Ireland, for over 20 years.

From developing its first wind farms through to delivering wind farm operations and maintenance services and now on to Anaerobic Digestion, Fossil Fuel Free Ships, Landfill Gas and most recently developing an Energy Storage solution for both on and offshore intermittent power generation, B9 is involved in virtually the whole range of renewable power generation options.

FIRST FLIGHT WIND

Perhaps most excitingly for the future, B9 is part of the First Flight Wind collaboration with Dong Energy and RES that has been granted offshore wind farm development rights off the County Down coast.

The company’s head office is in Larne – half an hour up the coast from Belfast Harbour, the site of the first purpose- built offshore wind installation and pre- assembly harbour in the UK or Ireland developed at a cost of £50 million and now leased to their partner Dong Energy. The company is planning to open its own satellite office in Belfast Harbour in the coming months.

LARGEST INDEPENDENT WIND FARM O&M SERVICE PROVIDER A founding member of the Global Wind Alliance, B9 Energy O&M Ltd is the B9 company that provides wind farm operation, maintenance and management services and in the two decades since it was formed it has become the UK and Ireland’s largest independent wind farm O&M service provider, operating over 500 turbines for a range of major utility owners, OEMs and large scale private owners, including financial institutions.

GROWTH IN WIND ENERGY The company has recently signed contracts for two new wind farms in Scotland and Cornwall and are anticipating further growth in each of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the remainder of 2013. These new contracts will push the B9 Energy operated and maintained figure beyond 600MW by the end of this year.

AMBITIOUS FUTURE PLANS These are exciting times for the company, over the past twelve months it has been making significant changes in its management, designed to invigorate the company and to take it forward as its core onshore market trebles in size over the next 5 years with the offshore market developing even more rapidly.

A six month programme involving 13 of the company’s most senior personnel has been developing plans to enhance its product offering to deliver a greater depth of service in its current markets and to broaden its capabilities allowing it to look further afield, particularly offshore.

SOLID FOUNDATIONS FOR GROWTH Recently appointed Managing Director, Ian Haugh, believes the company is well placed to face the challenges that come with being involved in such an attractive sector and that the company’s two decades in wind energy provide a great foundation on which to build successfully: “The outcome of the work the management group has been doing is that we have liberated a huge amount of talent existing within the company without losing any of the experience and wisdom of those who built it in the first place.

FEATURE SPONSOR

“We have a great heritage and our commitment to renewable energy is unrivalled, we are building on that and refocusing on the way the market is evolving to ensure we offer our clients what they want when they want it. We have begun to engage with our clients and other industry related organisations much more profoundly, developing a partnership based business model.”

COLLABORATION

One such partnership is with Belfast Metropolitan College. Recognising the increasing demand for skilled labour B9 and Belfast Metropolitan College have combined their industrial and academic expertise, to provide a training environment that promotes the development of wind energy skills and knowledge. The partnership began with an Assured Skills and Customised Training programme which includes the delivery of a Level 2 and Level 3 vocational Diplomas in Wind Turbine Operation and Maintenance.

This collaboration has created training solutions for the wider wind sector which can add value to offshore wind operations in Northern Ireland in general and has enabled B9 in particular to offer experienced, well trained technicians to the pre-assembly and commissioning operations currently taking place in Belfast Harbour.
