ECOLOGY: BIRD & ANIMAL SURVEYS

DR BETH MACKEY IN DEMAND

With the recent increase in the number of UK Offshore wind farms it’s no surprise that Dr Beth Mackey, Royal HaskoningDHV’s, marine mammal expert is in demand. Having worked on marine mammals for 14 years Beth is widely recognised in her field as one of the world’s leading experts.

HIGH PROFILE PROJECTS Since joining Royal HaskoningDHV in 2011 she has worked on some of the UK’s most high profile projects including the world’s largest windfarms Triton Knoll, Firth of Forth, Dogger Bank and Dudgeon. Her work is primarily about ensuring the UK and EU marine mammal populations are not adversely affected by any major development.

TRITON KNOLL

One of her recent assignments, Triton Knoll, was a challenging project to work on as The Wash and North Norfolk Coast is a Special Area of Conservation. Beth, through detailed assessment, determined

that the noise during pile driving, necessary for an offshore wind farm, would have little effect on the protected harbour seal population.

With a background in academia and consultancy she has a unique insight into understanding the needs of developers, regulators, and conservation requirements.

EXPERIENCE

As one of the UK’s leading scientists, and with her experience in wave and tidal energy, as well as offshore wind, Beth is increasingly being called upon to share best practice. This year she was invited by the US Department of Energy to participate in a workshop in Seattle with over 35 scientists and engineers from around America and Europe. The session centred on increasing knowledge of monitoring needs around marine renewable energy devices.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND Dr Mackey holds a Master of Science in Ecology and a Doctor of Philosophy in

Zoology from The University of Aberdeen and is regularly asked by the Government and Statutory Nature Conservation Agencies to give scientific advice relating the management of seal populations.

RESEARCH STRENGTH Beth’s strength lies in her ability to confidently and accurately use cutting edge marine mammal research to aid both the marine renewables industry and the oil and gas industry.
