SUPPORT SERVICES FOR OFFSHORE WIND FARMS PROBLEM


The operational challenges of providing support services to the new generation of offshore wind farms located at increasingly greater distances out to sea.


RECENT PRACTICE


Currently operators have to use a variety of vessel types to perform the range of support tasks involved. The innovative design engineering firm, Supacat, conducted detailed analysis of the operational requirements of wind farm operators and the wider marine engineering environment to identify a more cost effective solution.


FRESH THINKING


Bringing fresh thinking to the problem, the company developed the concept of a multi-purpose vessel that provides greater versatility to operators and transforms the way offshore support operations can be conducted.


SOLUTION


The SMV24 provides operators with `one boat to replace many`, enabling operators to conduct a wide range of support tasks associated with offshore wind farms and other maritime engineering installations and facilities.


SPECIFICS


With a high speed, high pay load and range are key discriminators for potential customers. Operated by a crew of 3 or 4, the 24 metre vessel can concurrently carry up to 12 additional passengers and up to 30 tonnes of cargo. It can achieve up to 30 knot speeds and has a range of up to 790nm.

COMPLETION DATE


The first SMV24 is due for completion in September 2013. It is being built by established boat builder, Mustang Marine

UNIQUE DECK SYSTEM The vessel has a revolutionary deck system, which is the key to its multi-role performance. Its distinctive feature is a through-deck from bow to stern with the crew area positioned overhead.


Running along the length of the vessel is an integrated rail system designed to accommodate ISO containers, a deck crane or diving rig, or other equipment for different roles.


The deck can carry up to 50ft of ISO containers in a variety of 20ft and 10ft combinations, other general cargo or a combination of cargo types. The ISO container concept provides operators with additional flexibility as they can be


(Wales) Ltd, at its Pembroke Dock facility under a contract awarded by Supacat.


Naval architects Incat Crowther were commissioned to translate Supacat’s SMV 24 concept into a detailed design and DNV were engaged to advise on classification.


The SMV24 will meet DNV 1A1 HSLC R1 Windfarm Service Vessel Class 1 and be UK MCA SCV Code (MGN280) Category 1.
