PAGE 31 THE GOOD NEWS My Father’s Crutches By Joni Eareckson Tada "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'"
Isaiah 52:7 Once while Ken was cleaning out our
garage, he came through the kitchen door holding up a pair of Canadian crutches. "Do you want to dump these?" he asked. I stared at the dusty crutches and my throat tight- ened. "They're Daddy's," I said with wet eyes. The aluminum was scraped and the rubber tips were scuffed, but the crutches brought into focus a flood of memories. All through his 70's and 80's my father
hobbled around on crutches due to arthritis. He had used them to shove around chairs or
boxes, or even ring a doorbell with one. On a good day, he could hit a ball tossed to him by a grandkid. Around the farm we could always tell when Dad was off on a horseback ride - his crutches
would be leaning against the hitching post. When I was in the hospital, I could always tell when my father was coming
for a visit. "Click-click" his crutches would echo on the hallway tile. Oh boy, Daddy's here! I would grin to myself. I felt that he, more than anyone else in the family, understood my situation. This is why that clicking sound, for me, was so welcomed. Today's verse talks about the beauty of feet that bring good news - that in-
cludes crutches! Think today about all the friends and family members you know who bring
you good tidings and the words of peace. The sandaled feet of your daughter, home from college. The tennis-shoed feet of your neighbor with whom you walk every morning.
What do people think of when they hear your feet coming? Do they say, "Oh boy, here comes...!" “Make my feet beautiful; Lord... may I be mindful to carry the good news of
your glad tidings to others today. Taken from More Precious Than Silver. Copyright © 1998 by Joni Eareckson Tada. Used
