being matched by the enthusiasm of the participants, this area of the show never fails to steal the spotlight. Hot off the Olympics and Paralympic Games Press, legacy was the watchword as the Sport section of the event, focused on ways of emulating the Olympian spirit as it sets about inspiring a generation.
Last but by no means least, visitors had at the opportunity to feast their senses on the latest food innovations ideal for leisure venues, from sports centres to theme parks, with tasty demonstrations and plenty of free sampling.
SPORTING CELEBRITIES Hot on the heels of the London 2012 Games, the show was boosted by celebrity appearances including popular gymnast Beth Tweddle, rower Greg Searle, badminton’s Gail Emms and many familiar faces from last year’s series of The Apprentice. The Education Village offered 150 hours of free education on subjects as varied as power hoop demos to splash zones and from training to social media.
Although many of the events were tried and tested from previous year, LIW 2012 had a whole new feel this year, benefi ting from a bright and refreshing makeover.
BALANCING THE BOOKS Visitors to LIW included Carolyn Brookes, aquatic offi cer and Wendy Blantford, aquatic manager, who are involved in the running of the Jubilee 2, 25m x eight lane pool at the Jubilee 2 Centre, Newcastle Under Lyme.

“The biggest challenge we face is in trying to deliver a balanced mix in the water that will cater for all visitors from children up to adults from learners to serious fi tness and club swimmers,” says Wendy Blantford, the pool’s aquatic manager, at this year’s LIW show. “We need a variety of equipment to use for those different sessions and we are specifi cally looking for a smaller infl atable for the fun sessions and any other water-related equipment.” The pool ‘s water treatment system is managed by UV with hth back up.
