Pool & Spa Scene: COMMERCIAL POOLS
…news in brief…
CRYPTO CLOSURE A swimming pool in South Wales was temporarily closed after an outbreak of the cryptosporidium sickness bug. Offi cials at Public Health Wales (PHW)
confi rmed it was investigating several cases centre around users of the Newport Centre. The single-celled parasite can cause an illness called cryptosporidiosis – with symptoms including mild to severe diarrhoea.
RAISING STANDARDS The Chartered Institute for Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) has launched a pool water quality award, which they say will help raise standards in the sector, across the country.
The initiative provides leisure centres and other pool operators with a framework for promoting high standards of pool water quality in the UK,that also recognises good practice.

diving courses where children as young as six years can learn to dive. The diving tower, the centrepiece of the main pool hall, was fabricated off- site in pre-cast concrete to give it the highest possible fi nish. Building work by Wates started on site in October 2010 and was completed within 22 months, with the two concrete pool tanks passing water tightness tests at the fi rst attempt.
OUTSTANDING FACILITY The outstanding aquatics facility will also be the new home of TeamLuton, the town’s largest swimming club, which currently has to travel almost 30 miles to Barnet to use facilities there. Jason Brown, new projects manager for Luton Learning & Community Partnership, commented:
“With the race on to capitalise on the
public’s enthusiasm for taking up new sports post the Olympics, it’s great that we’ve been able hand over the Aquatics
Centre on time and on budget this week. “By working in partnership with Luton Borough Council we have been able to deliver a world class sporting facility, which will not only encourage the people of Luton to increase their participation in sports, translating into health benefi ts, but could result in a few future members of Team GB swimming their fi rst lengths in the pool or taking their fi rst jump off a diving board.” The Aquatics Centre replaces a number of facilities in the area that are at the end of their economic life and which do not meet today’s accessibility standards nor the vigorous competition standards set by Sport England, and is aimed at addressing some of the serious health problems present in Luton, which has levels of obesity and type- two diabetes higher than the national average. PLUCKY PAIR Two plucky pensioners feel so strongly about plans to close their local swimming pool, they are gathering support for a petition outside their local shopping centre, wearing only their swimming costumes. Ann Taylor and Stuart Jaffray are protesting about the planned closure of the Scartho Road pool in about two years’ time to be replaced by a £7.5 million project at Grimsby Leisure Centre.
CHILLY WATERS
Contractors who failed to complete a new fl agship swimming pool in Cannock, Staffordshire, on time are to be fi ned as part of a pre-agreed penalty clause. The six-lane, 25-metre competition- standard pool, at the Chase Leisure Centre, was due to open in August but developed problems with heating the water.
POOL CLOSURE Plans to close a swimming pool in Southampton as part of council budget cuts have been approved. Oaklands, on the Oasis Lordshill Academy site, was initially shut due to faulty pipework. The area’s Labour run-council said the permanent closure it was most regrettable but was necessary as part of a mini-budget to save £833,000 in the current fi nancial year.
