“Although we do not sell slatted covers for safety benefit, you can adapt them with a lock on the final slat to make them more secure,” he adds.
“The major benefits of slatted covers are their heat retention
properties, especially with covers like Oase with slats that are dark underneath,” Paul says.
“Other big sales factors are the ease of maintenance of slatted covers that are more robust and, as an added bonus, you can retrofit them to existing pools.” Lynn Williams of Whitewaters, based in Tyne and Wear, agrees: “Even at the top end of the market, customers are demonstrating a much more proactive approach to energy efficiency, and this has had a significant impact on demand for pool covers in general.
“This trend appears to have gathered pace since the introduction of Part L, which has increased focus on insulation of pools and energy efficiency in general,” Lynn says. Whitewaters are working with architects and other specifiers who may have previously dismissed pool covers for indoor projects, but are also now keen to boost their green credentials, by specifying some kind of heat retention system for the majority of pools. Lynn again: “We find that covers mounted on the poolside are rarely acceptable on indoor projects, on purely aesthetic grounds. This means that covers need to be automatically operated and concealed in a pit or cave.”
