Gerald Phiri sets New 100 meters record Leslie Koroma
In a very convincing fashion, Gerald Phiri of Zambia came out of the blocks with a ferocious winning attitude. Such ferocity at the Texas Relays could only be attributed to his recent flub along with his teammates at the relay exchange they had the day before. His burning desires for revenge and to make a statement that he is one of the big boys of the sprints on the world stage as he ends his final year was no surprise to those who have followed his sprint career.
He would go on to lead the race from the start to finish and broke a 35 year old Texas Relays 100 meters record which had stood the assault of World Class and
Olympic sprinters like Carl Lewis and Maurice Green and the test of time. He would run the race in 10.06sec barely breaking the Old Record of 10.07 sec which was set by Ed Preston of Arkansas State in 1976. In the process he would also break the Zambian National record in the 100 meters as well, giving that nation hope for another World Championships and Olympic Medals in the future and another Marquee name at the world stage after former world class hurdler, Samuel Matete.
A very confident and ambitious Sprinter, Gerald Phiri hails from Zambia. He moved from Zambia to South Africa at a young age before his family eventually settled in Sheffield, England, where he grew up. It was in the UK where he started his sprinting career before finding his way to the US and finally to Texas at the Texas A&M University at College Station where his career has blossomed. He is in his final year and will be going pro after graduating later on this year hoping to pick up a major endorsement from any Shoe or sports apparel company to allow him to fulfill his dream and dethrone the likes of Usain Bolt of Jamaica and Tyson Gay of the USA.
Gerald Phiri has opened his 2011 outdoor campaign with a world leading time of the year in 10.06sec in the 100 meters setting a new Meets record for the Texas Relays and also a National Record for Zambia. With such an early eye opening performance and a number of major meets in this pre-Olympic year in the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea in late August and the All African Games in Maputo Mozambique in early September 2011 it is safe to say that we will be seeing some scintillating performances from Gerald later this year and beyond.
