The Egyptians have won the tournament three times in 1981, 1991 and 2003 while also the Ghanaians have won it three times in 1993, 1999 and most recently in 2009 in which they also went on to win the World Cup.


However, the 2011 tournament has proved to be a different entertainment showpiece with a lot of surprises, earlier the showdown was scheduled for Libya but was later shifted to South Africa because of the current political downturn in Libya.
