Following the suspension of then president Amos Adamu from all football and football- related activities for corruption charges, the Banjul extra-ordinary general assembly was convened to name a new president and executive committee.
But after a marathon deliberation by the FA presidents of 14 out of the16 member countries in attendance, the regional soccer body issued a communiqué saying it has accepted a recommendation from CAF to postpone elections to the Executive Com- mittee until the former carries out a proposed review of the organisation of all zonal unions in Africa.
Nigeria’s Amos Adamu-led executive committee was however suspended before a seven-member interim committee, headed by Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi, was formed to take charge.
In relaying the content of the two-page communiqué to the press, Nyantakyi, who is becoming a high-profile figure in African football, maintains that the Banjul assembly was a success despite the postponement of what was expected to be the main high- lights of the gathering – the election of the new president.
“Despite the non-holding of the elections, we still have successful deliberations per- taining to the welfare of football in Africa in general and the sub-region in particular. So I can submit that this [Banjull] meeting was a success,” he said.
Nyantaky added CAF will discuss the review of zonal unions, including WAFU, at its next meeting on May 16, 2011 after which the WAFU General Assembly will recon- vene on May 31 in Zurich to discuss the proposals of CAF for its re-organisation and also fix a date for the election of a “substantive executive committee.”
The Zurich meeting, he added, will also discuss the financial statements of WAFU, ac- tivity report and proposals for amendment of its constitution.
