The tournament which took place on May 1st to 6th saw Coulibaly stepping up on the po- dium after finishing in third position.
Coulibaly fought in the - 73 kg category, had five bouts with different opponents and ended up with four victories before he was defeated in the fifth bout.
"I thank my parents and God for me to be part of this and these are the people who wanted me to participate in this competition." Also, I thank the Malian Taekwondo Fed- eration, my coach, Idriss Coulibaly and all the other great masters. I am very pleased and proud to be a Malian. "It was my first time to participate in a global Championship", he said.
Among 7 fighters from Mali, Ismail Coulibaly was the only one to climb on the podium, six others which included four girls were eliminated in the initial round.
Meanwhile, the Malian Minister of Youth and Sports, Djiguiba Kéita PPR has send a con- gratulatory letter to Ismael Coulibaly and in a press release, the Minister hailed the fight- ers courage and of flying the country’s flag higher.
“His performance honors the Malian nation because it puts the Mali flag higher and en- hances the image of our country”, the press release reads. These same congratulations massage was sent to the Coaching Staff of the Malian Federation of Taekwondo and the National Olympic Committee and athletes of Mali (CNOSM) who never cease to work for a better performance of Mali.
Mali and the Morocco are the only Africa Nations to win medals at the championship with Coulibaly scooping a medal for Mali, the Moroccan team won three bronze medals. A to- tal of 2,387 fighters from 149 countries participated in the competition.
