Training
Rigorous training is the only reason about the East Africans’ exploits that is yet to be confronted with arguments. Everybody seems to acknowledge how hard and how dedicated East African athletes fine tune before, during and after local and major com- petitions.
Runners adhere to tough training sessions at very high heart rates, which is quite dif- ferent from how others train elsewhere. And in Kenya, athletes are subjected to brutal training methods. Running groups or cross-country training takes place is scary camps, with invitations only sent to athletes who are on elite level.
These kinds of preparations give East African runners an edge over others and keep them far from reach.
National interest
Long distance race is the pride sport of East Africans, as soccer is to West Africans and North Africans; or as Basketball and American football are to Americans.
Every year, role models and motivators emerge, and keep stimulating the youths into hard work, with hope of competing in an international tournament and making some money enough to say goodbye to poverty.
