Moving away from Zambia, Tanzanian sports associations particularly those oversee- ing athletics, boxing and swimming, have faced a lot of criticism from their local press. While others are gearing up, the local media have accused some of these officials who always look for scapegoats whenever athletes fail to impress at high-profile games like these even when they ought to have faulted themselves first.
The game is around the corner but here are no noticeably serious efforts in the coun- try neither in terms of preparation nor to say any winning strategies. It is said that for the past three years Tanzanian athletes have performed especially poorly in the inter- national games and there are no hope of better performance in upcoming games.
For Botswana, the country’s National Olympic Committee (BNOC) continues to step up preparations for both the All Africa games and the London 2012 Olympic Game as they draw ever nearer. Amongst other things, the BNOC has secured from Olympic Solidarity, funding for the National Women’s Volleyball team amounting to US $60 000 (approx BWP 400 000) towards preparations for the 2011 All Africa Games and Olympic Games Qualifying tournaments. In addition, the BNOC has secured training scholarships for three athletes from the Botswana Athletics.
In handball, Angola, Algeria, Egypt were all chosen as top seeds for the draws of the games and possible, the two rivals Algeria and Egypt will not certainly meet in the first round but are favourites to win the tournament. Senegal, Angola and Congo are the other favourites battling for a semi final spot. And in the ladies’ category, with the absence of Tunisia, Angola will be the big favourites over teams like Congo and Alge- ria.
