part had taken a step up.
Jackson Cheung, a
member of IPIM’s board,
agreed and said: “Consid-
ering the context of the in-
ternational financial crisis,
the number of professional
visitors was fairly good. Our
expectations were lower’’.
Crisis confidence
One of the MIF’s big-
gest attractions was the
busy United States sec-
tion. As a major investor
in Macau the US wants to
strengthen its position in
the local market. To this
end, AmCham Macau fo-
cused on trade related to
services and franchising
investment opportunities
for local SMEs.
Despite the deepen-
ing international financial
crisis and the slowdown
of the growth in Macau,
Charles Choy, secretary of
AmCham Macau remained
upbeat: “United States in-
vestors are still very con-
fident about doing business
in Macau,’’ he said.
Miguel Crespo, the
head of the Portuguese
Agency for Trade and In-
vestment (AICEP) took a
similar view, saying that
the activity and contact-
making of companies from
Portugal were very positive
considering the turbulent
economic situation.
At total of 22 compa-
nies and business associa-
tions from Portugal were
represented at the fair,
