Our holistic view of counselling

Here at the Acorn Wellbeing Centre we offer a wide variety of help relating to common life issues, from low cost one-to-one counselling through to couples counselling. We also run short self-help workshops, CBT workshops, and support groups. These all take place in our secure premises based in the The Old Town at Hemel Hempstead.

Couples Counselling Couples counselling, previously known as marital therapy or marriage guidance, addresses the problems which can arise within intimate relationships. The relationship, rather than the two individuals, is the ‘client’. Our very closest relationships; a marriage, co- habitation, or civil partnership, are based on intimacy and trust. When they stop working we are deeply affected and our health and happiness suffer. Our sense of identity and self-worth often rests upon the strength of our relationships and we can despair when our prime relationship fails. Pressures of work, family, money and health all take their toll. Suddenly, the relationship that once recharged us leaves us feeling drained and disappointed.

Group Therapy Group counselling and psychotherapy is facilitated by experienced and fully-qualified therapists. Individuals

who come along to us form as a group to share their experiences in a safe and supported environment. Group therapy enables members to form trusted relationships which have honesty and emotional depth. Members of the group support each other, whilst gently challenging individual negative self- defeating beliefs that can develop from life experiences within the family, or from underlying trauma. The process enables group members to develop self-awareness and understanding, and to then make the necessary changes and form new and healthy patterns of relating.

Addiction Therapy Addiction is a process or cycle which an individual develops to distract them from their negative

emotions or circumstances. It manifests itself in many different ways, including remaining in unhealthy relationships, forming unhealthy relational patterns, excessive use of social networking sites, excessive internet use, shopping, gambling, substance misuse, obsessive-compulsive behaviours and body dysmorphia. Individual and group therapies complement each other, and allow the individual to gain insight into the causes of the addictions, and enable the healing process to begin. A team of eight counsellors cover a wide range of counselling skills. We are members of the BACP, and are fully insured.
