Nick Ménage found success with Wilkins Chimney Sweep

INVESTMENT LEVEL: £15,000 “P

eople can mow their own lawns and they can clean their own ovens but they can’t sweep their own chimneys,” thought

new franchisee Nick Ménage when he purchased Wilkins Chimney Sweep North Oxon in July last year.

After 27 years of owning and running a successful gym with wife Gillian, Nick, a father of two, wanted a quieter life without the stress and responsibility of employing large numbers of staff or maintaining a premises, but still with a decent income and the chance to grow a business in the future. A chat with a friend who works as a fireman confirmed for Nick the very real need for a good chimney sweep in the current day. He says: “I wanted to start a new business without the stress of starting from scratch. I know what it’s like to do

it all on your own and, at 52, I knew I didn’t want to do that again. Having received an email from Wilkins, I was instantly attracted by the strong branding and the fact that it was a very different kind of business. A friend of mine is a fireman and once he’d explained to me how frequent and dangerous chimney fires can be and that chimney sweeps provide a vital safety service to the public, it was a relatively easy decision to make. Added to that the annual repeat business and pay- on-the-day model and it quickly became a very attractive proposition.” Looking forward, Nick says: “I’ve been trading now since July 2013 and things are going really well. I’ve had a huge amount of bookings following a PR launch in the local press and my business is doing really well. Loads of old friends have been in touch asking me to sweep their chimneys, some of whom I haven’t spoken to since primary school! I’ve had great support from the

franchisor and have every reason to believe my Wilkins Chimney Sweep franchise will be a roaring success.” If award-winning franchise Wilkins Chimney Sweep sounds like the business for you, ring Louise Harris for a chat or book onto their next discovery day. n
