From trading to tools

Dave Unwin gave up a career in finance for his Snap-on franchise

INVESTMENT LEVEL: £17,960

on Tools are the highest quality tools in the market, which makes my job really easy. It’s a great business – I love what I do!” Snap-on Tools have been in business for over 90 years – they were established back in 1920 – and have been in the UK and Ireland for almost half a century. With a network of over 4,500 franchisees selling over 22,000 products, investors can have complete confidence that going into business with Snap-on means going into business with the best.

“Snap-on give me the freedom to do things my own way and in my style, meaning I have control over my working day and week”

Snap-on have a unique online recruitment

process, which means prospective franchisees can learn about the business at home, with dedicated one-on-one phone calls with the recruitment manager at a time to suit them.

Snap-on franchisees visit customers at their place of work, which is a great advantage as they are not waiting for customers to find them.

Dave Unwin D

ave Unwin, Snap-on’s franchisee in West Wickham, comes from possibly the most unlikely background for a Snap-on franchise owner, having

previously worked in the financial heart of the City as currency market trader. Dave started his career in 1988 with NatWest Markets, then BZW (Barclays de Zoete Wedd), and finally with the Bank of Tokyo- Mitsubishi UFJ before making the decision – now over 11 years ago – to do something completely different. “There are very few similarities with being a financial trader to what I do now. As a Snap-on franchisee you have to be a salesman, a bit of an accountant and your own warehouse manager,” says Dave. Dave chose Snap-on over other opportunities available because, as he explains: “Snap-on ticked all the boxes for me; they offered a proven business model and a well-established premium brand. Not having a background in anything remotely similar to automotive tools really

hasn’t hindered my progress. “The initial training that Snap-on

provides, coupled with the help and constant support from your franchise developer, is really all you need.” The training from Snap-on is

comprehensive and during the initial two- week course you learn all you need to run a successful Snap-on business. Dave adds that: “The support continues when you are a franchisee, with visits from your franchise developer and the lively and informative sales meetings, which not only provide serious discussion but also some good-natured banter too. “A Snap-on franchise isn’t for

everyone, but then no franchise is. I would recommend Snap-on to those with the drive and determination to succeed because when you follow the Snap-on business model, it works. It really is as simple as that! “What I enjoy most is that I really am my own boss. Snap-on give me the freedom to do things my own way and in my style, meaning I have control over my working day and week. My customers know that Snap-
