has investigated the basics of plasma detection technology as a means for increasing sensitivity stability and the detectable concentration range. Tis has resulted in the barrier discharge ionisation detector (BID), a new detector capable of the high- sensitivity detection of both organic and inorganic compounds, while providing excellent durability.

“Te Tracera is a ground-breaking new system that combines this new type of detector, offering features not provided by conventional detectors, with the Shimadzu GC-2010 Plus high-performance capillary gas chromatograph,” Said Masahito Ueda, general manager of GC & TA business unit, analytical & measuring instruments division. “It is expected to improve the efficiency of high-sensitivity, trace-quantity analyses, and to reduce equipment and analysis costs.”

Finally, following collaboration with Dow Chemical, Waters has announced a new advanced polymer chromatography (APC) system which the company says defines a new category of chromatographic polymer analysis - yielding improved molecular weight information about polymeric species, faster than ever before. Te system delivers dramatically improved polymer peak resolution, particularly for low molecular weight polymers and oligomers, up to 20 times faster than traditional gel permeation chromatography (GPC).

Known as ACQUITY, the APC

system comprises an innovative, refractive index detector that has been optimised for low dispersion but with the low noise and drift performance required for accurate integration, even at low polymer concentrations.

Te precise flow delivery of the isocratic solvent manager ensures that the calibrated system delivers accurate molecular weight data, day after day. Additionally, the system features new column technology based on rigid, sub-3µm, high pore volume bridged-ethyl hybrid particles that provide significant gains in stability and faster separations.

Ian King, Waters vice president of separations technologies, noted that APC represents a major change from soft gel columns that are susceptible to swelling in the solvents used for polymer analysis.

“With APC, scientists can run diverse polymer applications on a single system, on one bank of columns with a variety of solvents,” he said. “Now our customers can significantly improve laboratory efficiency and asset utilisation. Tis collaboration with Dow is an example of what can happen when you merge leading edge technology with excellent innovation and effective collaboration.”

In another development, Waters has added quality control reference materials (QCRMs) and certified containers to its analytical standards and reagents product group. Specifically designed for Waters instruments, QCRMs are the simplest and fastest way to understand a chromatography system’s health while ensuring repeatable performances.

Te company adds that its certified containers for solvents and mobile phases are uniquely processed and treated to prevent extraneous peaks and baseline noise.

“We added analytical standards and reagents to Waters’ competency because they improve the accuracy of measurements. QCRMs and certified containers are another significant and innovative step in that direction. By integrating these products, our customers can see improved data acceptance. Furthermore, by eliminating the need to mix and formulate standards and the unknown quality of mobile phase and solvent containers, our customers will have more time for scientific problem solving,” said Mike Yelle, vice president, consumable business unit for Waters.

Cool solution for GC column installation A

of the company’s Cool-Lock Nut. The novel nut ensures precise and painless gas

chromatograph (GC) column installation and eliminates the need for wrenches or other tools. The low thermal mass design allows the Cool-Lock Nut to cool rapidly, preventing users from burning their fingers during column changes. Other novel design elements prevent

the column from slipping to ensure a more reproducible installation depth for improved method accuracy. The short online video guides users through the quick installation process. “Because this product is unique, it’s helpful to see

a quick demo on the installation process,” explained Kristen Parnell, brand manager of GC products for Phenomenex. “Method sensitivity losses of up to 30 or 40 per cent are common when columns are not installed at the optimal depth. It’s difficult to ensure exact

positioning because the work space is cramped and the materials are quite hot. The Cool-Lock Nut allows users to change a column very quickly without burning their fingers, while helping to improve installation accuracy and reproducibility.” The Phenomenex Cool-Lock Nut works with all

standard GC columns and is compatible with Agilent and Shimadzu GC systems. The Nut is available in both long and short ferrule dimensions and can be used over and over for accurate column installations.
