Out and About proportion>london ‘Mr Selfridge’ ITV Drama
When is a shop not a shop? We’ve not gone mad - the answer is: when it’s the set for incredible ITV drama, ‘Mr Selfridge’!
It’s not quite like our usual projects, but when we heard about proportion>london getting involved in helping to set the scene for the incredible new ITV drama ‘Mr Selfridge’, we decided it was about time to make an exception. It is all about retail, after all…
Following the rise of Harry Gordon Selfridge’s incredible London department store, ‘Mr Selfridge’ begins as the store is opened in 1909, and depicts how the store would have appeared at the time. Everything from window dressing to the tiny details of bust forms and accessory presenters have been carefully selected to reflect the style of the era.
Brass accessory presenters and calico
covered bust forms featured in the first episode of the drama are just some of the products provided by proportion>london. The accessory area in Selfridges is the centre of much of the show’s action, and as the ladies get displays ready atop their glass counter‐tops there are a number of proportion>london treats such as bag stands, jewellery neck forms, scarf presenters, miniature bodies and wooden articulated hands on display.
Despite the fact that these vintage style items were chosen specifically for the show because they suit the time period, such products are still a popular choice for retailers wanting to add a little something different to their displays. The team at proportion>london believes that this is a testament to the idea that there are some timeless trends that are simply worth treasuring.
Linked to the Selfridges history, proportion>london also has a heritage that dates back to the early 20th century. As such, a number of traditional
manufacturing techniques have lasted and are still employed to this day. For example, papier‐mâché bust forms and torsos are still handcrafted by the team of specialists today. Tanya Reynolds, Creative Director of

The Vintage Style Accessory range was conceived using archive drawings from old directories, original Edwardian samples and we kept in mind that the collection should look exactly as it would have the day that Harry Gordon Selfridge first opened his store”.
