VM and Display Q&A
FOR DISPLAY ONLY
We talk to the organisers behind the VM and Display Show to gather some insider information on this year’s event.
The VM and Display Show is one of the most highly anticipated trade shows in the retail calendar. Providing an exploration of the colours, trends and excitement taking hold of the visual merchandising and display industry this year, the show is a mustvisit for all involved in the sector. With everything from props to mannequins, full scale windows and beyond, the Business Design Centre is set to come alive with the wonderful world of retail from the 16th to 18th April.
What was the inspiration behind launching the VM and Display Show, and in what year did it launch? In the late 80's we were producing VM Magazine, and in 1990 we were approached by three of the large mannequin companies Gemini, Hindsgaul and Rootstein. They wanted an exhibition

purely for the visual merchandising and display industry and so we launched the very first show at the New Connaught Rooms in London in February 1991. It was a phenomenal success and took the industry by storm. We outgrew the venue very quickly and within a couple of years we moved to the Business Design Centre in Islington, which was fast becoming a new and trendy area of London.
The retail industry has changed significantly over the last decade; what changes have you noticed in the VM and display sector? There used to be much bigger display teams. These have been cut down significantly and the role of Visual Merchandising Managers has increased. This could well follow a trend in other industry sectors.
