Payment Systems

new payment technology. Beyond helping with the security of a
payment system, Chandler thinks that the use of authentication could be seen by retailers as a tool for the development of a more involved relationship with the customer; “If retailers know when a consumer has arrived rather than left, they can provide a tailored customer experience and share highly targeted offers and promotions using intelligence that can help increase spending and boost revenues”. Chandler’s worries about the security of speedy payment systems is echoed by a number of other leading figures in the payments industry. Bill Farmer, CEO of Mako Networks, has also highlighted his concern for the protection of customer information; “Retailers are the guardians of data and have an ongoing responsibility to their customers to ensure personal data and card details are protected,” he explains. If responsibility for data is not enough, the financial implications of security breaches and noncompliance can be disastrous, especially for smaller businesses. “It’s critical that we work
together as an industry to educate retailers about the potential damage a data breach can cause to a business, and what they can do to achieve compliance and protect themselves and their customers,” explains Farmer. Organisers that provide PCI DSS compliant technology for the retail environment have a huge part to play in the compliance process, and collaborating with vendors to tackle security threats should make the whole process much more simple for all parties. The integration of online and physical
store environments, as well as the development of mobile commerce platforms to be used by customers in store, has lead to a new way of looking at the instore experience. Rather than considering online shopping as the enemy, a number of retailers have decided to

embrace the platform instore as a way of providing the customer with more information. By allowing the retailer to display their entire product offering online, the shop floor is suddenly opened up to a much more theatrical interaction with the customer. Space is freed up for incredible visual merchandising installations, more focus on the company’s brand identity or even just to allow the customer more room to move around, rather than having all this space taken up by stock needed on the shop floor.

respond to new ideas quickly and efficiently,” believes Damian Hanson, CEO of One iota.
“Mobile payment methods will play a big role in the future retail environment as they will be faster to use than existing card methods and SmartPod’s capacity to accept mobile payment, in a quick and secure manner, gives the retailer greater flexibility in establishing the next generation of
retail”. The payment
process is steadily keeping up with customer’s
increasing demands for speed and efficiency. It is essential that retailers don’t get carried away with the rush and lose sight of their responsibilities for customer data.
