Wind farm vessel completed T

HE successful completion of one of the largest and most innovative boats

it has built in recent years has been reported by Alnmaritec, which designs and builds aluminium workboats on the north east-coast of the UK, in Northumberland. Xplorer has been built for the north

east-based company North Sea Logistics and is the first of the brand new Wave Commander class of vessel from Alnmaritec. She was launched at Blyth in Northumberland, in February, after seven months under construction. The boat is designed to operate as a support

vessel for offshore wind farms and she is the sixth in a line of craft that Alnmaritec has built specifically for this purpose. She is an aluminium catamaran measuring

15m by 6m with a light displacement of 17tonnes and her new hull form has been extensively tested in the model towing tank at Newcastle University to optimise performance. The boat is fitted with twin 490bhp

electronically controlled Cummins QSC diesel engines driving Hamilton 364 waterjets, rather than conventional propellers, which give her a top speed of over 20knots, as well as excellent manoeuvrability and a shallow draught.

Xplorer, a new first of class vessel, is pictured here on sea trials in the North Sea.

She carries a complement of two crew and

12 passengers in comfort within the large deckhouse, as well as cargo of up to 2tonnes on the aft deck, and she is fitted with an array

of the latest electronic equipment including a satellite ‘man-finder’ tracking system, 3D sea bed profiling, as well as radar, GPS, chartplotter, and satcom system.

When so much relies on your steering, don’t compromise.
