HE fourth vessel in the Sanmar Eskort series of 70tonne bollard pull escort tugs


was recently delivered by Sanmar, Turkey. The vessels are to a 32m Robert Allan-design, and a total of seven tugs of this type are either in service or on order. The latest vessel to be delivered is for


Rimorchiatori Laziali, bought by this Italian operator while under construction, and named Tirreno. Its design has been slightly modified to increase its oil recovery capability. Each tug is propelled by a pair of Rolls-Royce


US255 azimuth thrusters with CP propellers in nozzles. The input power is 2025kW at 1000rev/min and the propellers have a diameter of 2.6m. An attraction of this thruster design for tug applications is that the propeller pitch


OSD utility offshore tug meets challenging brief

NE of the biggest challenges that tug designers face today is the need for their


designs to be able to cover a number of often conflicting roles. WorldWise Marine, now part of Offshore Ship Designers, has come up with a utility offshore tug design which can be tweaked to cover a number of roles, including salvage. Two vessels are building now and Thailand’s


Unithai Shipyard will shortly deliver the first of the pair of 65tonne bollard pull utility offshore tugs to Svitzer Wijsmuller. The 45m length overall azimuth stern drive vessels were built to a WorldWise Marine design which allows them to fulfil a challenging multi-role brief. The tugs can assist berthing and un-


berthing of vessels with a deadweight ranging from 60,000tonnes to 280,000tonnes, and can operate in long-line or push-pull towing mode, and firefighting mode. The vessels can also act as maintenance vessels at SBMs, and for floating/subsea hose strings, and pipelines. Finally, they can carry out field supply, anchor handling, or act as salvage tugs. setting mechanism works very rapidly, which helps to reduce black smoke from the engines under changing load conditions. These Sanmar tugs are 32m long and have


a beam of 11.6m. The thrusters are arranged in the azimuthing stern drive layout, and to improve escort capability the vessels are fitted with an escort skeg, which gives a very effective indirect towing mode. The first tug delivered of this design was


Achille Onorato, completed for Rimorchiatori Sardi, in 2004. It was followed by a vessel for Lamnalco, in Dubai, and the third in the series went to Rimorchiatori Neri, in Italy. Two other escort tugs of this type are to be supplied by the Turkish yard to Laziali, and Moby, in Italy.


New series building Sanmar is now constructing a new series of 40tonne bollard pull ship assist tugs which are propelled by US155 FP azimuth thrusters from Rolls-Royce. Yet another design of tug under


construction at the yard in Tuzla is a 60tonne bollard pull escort tug, of which two examples are being constructed, both propelled by US205 thrusters with CP propellers. The yard is also starting a series of even


more powerful vessels in the form of 80tonne bollard pull escort tugs for which US255 CP thrusters are specified. These are being used at their maximum power rating of 2400kW each.
