NORWAY With a RIM-driven propeller, improved

hydrodynamics and technically simple design is achieved. The stator of the permanent magnet electrical motor is incorporated in the tunnel and the rotor ring carries the inward pointing propeller blades, resulting in a very thin hub, improving efficiency. Another benefit is that the efficiency-reducing gap between the blades and the tunnel is eliminated. Rolls-Royce has used composite materials

extensively in the design. The bearings are water lubricated, eliminating shaft seals and oil-filled gearhousing. A prototype unit of 50kW has been tested

Rolls-Royce's RIM Drive differs from Brunvoll's development in that it has a thin blade- supporting hub in the middle.

Olympic Octopus, a UT 712 L -class anchor handling vessel built by Aker Yards for Olympic Shipping, is the first vessel to receive Rolls-Royce's RIM Drive tunnel thruster.

for several years, including more than 3000 hours of endurance tests. High efficiency and reduced noise and vibrations have been achieved. The new RIM Drive thruster is substantially lighter than conventional tunnel thrusters and its axial length is much shorter. Rolls-Royce notes that this is a major

benefit for a stern thruster, as the skeg can be narrower and the thruster can be placed further aft, resulting in bigger turning moment. In addition, no thruster motor room is required.

Rolls-Royce claims that the installation work

at the yard is simple, and that its RIM Drive units can, if needed, be exchanged without drydocking. Rolls-Royce also notes that fuel consumption savings can be substantial. Some sources have indicated to Ship & Boat International that a 20% higher efficiency can be achieved. The electro-mechanical elements will also be

applicable for Rolls-Royce's winches, steering systems, and other products.
