New orders for innovative vessels NORWAY

ORWEGIAN Ulstein Group this year celebrates its 90th year of operation.


The Ulstein Verft shipyard, in Ulsteinvik, is a globally well-known supplier of advanced offshore vessels and also other specialised vessels like seismic vessels, cable layers, and vessels for offshore installations and construction. The product por tfolio of the group


includes A-series anchor-handling vessels, P-series platform supply vessels, and S- series specialised multifunctional vessels. In all, the Ulstein Group employs some 600 and Ulstein Verft has some 360 own employees. Most ship's hulls are built by Maritim


Ltd, in Poland, and towed to Ulsteinvik for assembly, outfitting, and finishing.


Bourbon Mistral and Bourbon Monsoon The recently built PX105-type platform supply vessels Bourbon Mistral and Bourbon Monsoon are on long-term contracts for BP Norway to primarily supply oil fields in the Norwegian part of the North Sea. These vessels are the first PSV's with a reversed stem of Ulstein's X- Bow type. They are also the biggest PSV's of own design built at the yard. These diesel-elect r ic vessels were


supplied with four 9L20 Wärtsilä diesel engines delivering 1665kW at 900rev/min, and each driving an ABB AEM SE500L8 generator. Propulsion is provided by two Schottel Combi Drive SCD-20202 azimuth propellers, with a diameter of 2.65m. The electric motors, supplied by ABB, have a power rating of 2750kW. ABB also supplied the motors for one


1200kW Brunvoll tunnel thruster and one 850kW Brunvoll retractable azimuthing

thruster forward. The vessels have DP2 capabilities with a system provided by Kongsberg. Bourbon Mistral and Bourbon Monsoon


have lengths overall of 88.8m, lengths bp of 82.0m, breadths of 19.0m, and the deadweight at maximum draught is 4720dwt. Accommodation has been provided for 22 persons. The vessels are the f irst f it ted with


Ulstein Elektro's Integrated Automation System (IAS), that controls and monitors all processes and operations aboard a vessel. It generates alarms in case of failures, and is linked to Ulstein's other


electrical innovation, the Ulstein Bridge Alarm System. The system collects audible alarms from


all the systems on the bridge and also monitors human activity. Either a text display or a voice alarm module (optional) shows which system caused the alarm. Built to DNV class, the vessels are the


first built with the Clean Design notation, with no oil tanks against the hull. They are also classified as rescue vessels, with equipment to accommodate 250 people in an emergency situation. There is extra lighting, camera monitoring of the rescue zones, and a bigger than usual MOB.


Two AHTS ordered Another recent contract is for two new anchor handling and construction vessels of the ULSTEIN A122 design, building for Olympic Shipping. When delivered in 2009, the vessels will be the biggest AHTS vessels ever built at the yard. These vessels will also be constructed to Clean Design standards. The A122 vessels will be outfitted for
