of the shipowner as well. Brunvoll already worked on the first prototype some five years ago. Today, web-based monitoring is already in operation and Mr Andresen sees that this is to become the standard way of monitoring.
New permanent magnet electric drives under development Norpropeller AS claims several novel concepts within electrical power generation and power transmission. Together with Brunvoll, work is currently taking place on development of permanent magnet (PM) drives for marine applications. Work is ongoing for elect r ic main
propulsion drives with a PM generator, connected to a PM propul sion motor. Norpropeller is also involved with the permanent magnet (PM) elect rical motor development for the RIM-driven thrusters. According to Mr Andresen, this
arrangement is a real 'fixed electric shaft drive' application, eliminating the need for big cyclo-converters and high-power transformers. Only small-size frequency conver ters are needed for low-power operation and for changing the rotational direction of the motor. The companies are currently working on a big prototype installation. ‘We will tell the public more about this when the time is right,’ concluded Mr Andresen.
Norcontrol AS is involved in the development work of the permanent magnet drives for Brunvoll's RIM-drives. The two companies are now also developing a new electrical PM main propulsion system.
