Fjellstrand diversifies into new areas B

ASED in Omastrand, Fjellstrand AS is well-known for its aluminium high-

speed catamarans, and has lately been active with a variety of projects. Triggered by low numbers of newbuilding orders for high-speed catamarans, due to higher fuel costs, the yard has diversified its activities and now constructs other types of vessels, as well as being a sub-supplier of aluminium constructions for offshore rigs, and other vessels, for other local yards. In December 2006, the yard secured an

important order for a ROV/survey vessel for GEO ASA. The contract, signed with GEO ASA subsidiary Geograph Shipping, is valued at Nkr130 million. The new vessel will be built on a converted

Romanian trawler, supplied by the owner, which will also supply the advanced survey equipment to be installed. Glesvær Ship Design AS supplied the technical specification and drawings for the vessel, which as a type is a completely new market segment for Fjellstrand. According to Bjarne Boerven, sales director,

the contract was won in tough competition with domestic and foreign shipyards, and secures much of this year's employment at the yard. ‘We currently have a staff of 130 at the yard and we will work together with a number of local subcontractors on this, and other, projects. Consequently, the yard will employ approximately 250 workers in the next six months,’ he told Ship & Boat International. The vessel is to be handed over to the owner in mid-2007.

Green ships taking shape In October last year, Fjellstrand signed a contract with an environmental organisation, the Green Warriors of Norway, for the design and construction of a coastal surveillance and environmental research vessel. The craft, to be named MS Miljødronningen

II, will provide a floating conference centre for the organisation. It will also function as a coastal surveillance vessel and will be engaged in environmental research. As a f loating laboratory, alternative
