Interactive training tool launched


Ship Simulator Professional, an interactive training tool for maritime professionals, has recently been introduced by VSTEP. Ship Simulator Professional connects standard navigation equipment and software to the Ship Simulator game. Ship Simulator Professional builds on the


success of Ship Simulator 2006, a game which allows users to navigate various vessel types through major global ports and waterways. Through the game, players can follow the vessel’s position, direction, and speed on an electronic chart. Ship Simulator Professional outputs NMEA signals, which can be picked up by any NMEA-compliant device, like ECDIS. Professional users, such as nautical colleges,


can use Ship Simulator Professional to teach students the principles of electronic navigation. Handling ECDIS is becoming a standard component of modern navigation and can now be trained in a low-cost classroom environment. Other ships in the game are seen as AIS objects, allowing Ship Simulator Professional to also be used for AIS training. The realistic graphics of Ship Simulator


make it a perfect tool for equipment manufacturers to demonstrate the working of navigation equipment. Running the electronic chart on a second monitor, consumer-players use Ship Simulator Professional to intensify their simulation experience. Order won for linkspan and pedestrian bridge


TTS has won a contract to design, supply, and install a linkspan and pedestrian lifting bridge as part of the Rothesay Pier ferry berth improvement project. This comes in anticipation of the introduction of MV Argyle, one of a series of new vessels in operation on CalMac’s most frequented route between Rothesay and Wemyss Bay. These new vessels have been designed with


bow and stern ramps for use with parallel berth linkspans at both ends of the route. The linkspan will begin operation in early summer. TTS’ proposal for the new linkspan


comprises a ramp hinged at the bank seat, supported by a portal structure at the dolphins. The structure will be operated with the use of four hydraulic cylinders, designed to move it vertically with live loads. The linkspan will be 30m long, with a


driving width of 4m, and will be equipped with fenders. The front of the linkspan will feature a


slope to accommodate a variety of vessel ramp geometries, for example, those of MV Coruisk and MVBute (Significant Small Ships of 2005) currently in operation. The linkspan can also be used by vessels without ramps as it is equipped with a hinged flap at the front towards the vessel.


58 The flap is also operated by the hydraulic


cylinders and will follow the vessel’s movements once positioned on the vessel shelf. TTS will also deliver a 14m-long lifting


bridge, allowing pedestrian access over the northern end of the pier, which separates the inner and outer harbours. The bridge is to hinge, with a counter-balance at the hinged end. The bridge will be operated with the use


of two hydraulic cylinders located at each side. The ramp will rest on a support in its horizontal position and is designed to be opened to a 75deg angle to allow access for sea traffic. The machinery cabinet, from where the


bridge will be operated, will be installed close by and will include both electrical and hydraulic equipment. Navigation signals for sea traffic will be located by the bridge. In addition to TTS’ design and supply of

Environmental technology company acquired


An agreement to purchase the Swedish company Senitec AB in Varberg has been signed by Wärtsilä. The company is privately-owned and specialises in environmental technology products for separating waste such as oily water and sludge in power plants, harbours, and ships.
