New design innovation NORWAY
T
HE Vik-Sandvik Group consists of a number of companies providing design,
engineering, and consultancy services to the shipbuilding and shipping industries. Some 400 ships have been designed by Vik-Sandvik in more than 30 years of operation. Vik-Sandvik Group’s subsidiary companies,
Vik-Sandvik and Skipskonsulent AS, provide ship designs and naval architectural services in Norway. Vik-Sandvik AS, with offices in Fitjar, Norway, specialises in fishing vessels, research vessels, offshore vessels, seismic vessels, and conversions. The group also has design and/or ship supply activities in countries such as Poland, China, Brazil, and India. Vik-Sandvik's recent contracts show an
impressive amount of vessels and designs, of which orders have been placed at shipyards all over the world.
Offshore construction Interesting vessels to be built in Norway include the multi-purpose supply vessel that is currently under construction for DOF ASA, from Kleven Verft, in Ulsteinvik, for delivery in the third quarter of 2007. This VS 495 DEM is a combined diesel-
electric/diesel mechanical multi-functional platform service vessel (MPSV), and utilises the advantages from both electrical and diesel mechanical propulsion. A single propeller with shaft and reduction gear directly connected to two engines, gives better propeller efficiency, and avoids the electrical loss of diesel- electrical propulsion during steaming. In DP mode and in slow steaming, the vessel
will operate diesel-electrically with three retractable azimuths thrusters and three tunnel thrusters in total. The vessel has a length of 96.9m, a breadth of 21.0m, and a deck area of 1030m2

been classified by DNV to 1A1, Clean Design, Comf V (3) C (3), Fi-Fi II, Standby Vessel, Oil Rec. Meanwhile, in December 2006, Troms Offshore placed an order at Kleven Verft for a

similar vessel, an advanced MPSV of type VS 495 DEM CD Mk II. This vessel is 95.3m long, has a breadth of 21.0m, features a working deck of 1030m2
This vessel is to be delivered in 2009. The Vik-Sandvik PSV VS470 design has
been extremely successful, and to date more than 25 have been ordered. Last year Siem Offshore ordered two of these vessels to be built at Aker Yards Aukra and SBS Marine Ltd; and Simon Mokster Shipping AS ordered a MKII version from Karmsund Maritime Service AS. While in February 2007, Aries Shipping
ordered a similar ship from Myklebust Verft. These craft have a length overall of 73.4m, a breadth of 16.6m, and a deck area of 680m2 Møkster Safety AS is building two ultra-

other standby ships is their ability to pull lifeboats directly onboard in extreme weather conditions via a special stern slipway. The vessels' man overboard (MOB) boats are normally launched and retrieved using this slipway. Other facilities include a sick bay and a helideck, which makes it possible to secure rapid medical assistance as well as to evacuate passengers from the vessel if necessary.
Tug orders In March 2006, Aker Yards received a massive order for eight AHTS plus two options, of the Vik-Sandvik VS-472 design for AP Moller - Maersk. Deliveries are set for 2008 and 2009. These vessels have a length of 73.2m, and a depth of 9.1m. Additional vessels designed by Vik-
Sandvik together with the client, were six VS 491 CD-type AHTS vessels. These were ordered, along with options for six more ships, by Siem Offshore at Kleven Verft. The contractual value for the six vessels is Nkr3.2 billion, making it the largest single order in the history of Kleven Maritime. The 19,000kW vessels will have a bollard
pull of 300tonnes, a winch capacity of 500tonnes, and will accommodate 60 persons. The tugs have a length of 91m and a breadth of 22m. The ice-strengthened vessels will be prepared for an A-frame installation, and ROVs. Deliveries are set for 2009 and 2010. Solstad Offshore ASA has also placed orders

for similar vessels at Karmsund Maritime Service AS, for delivery in 2008 and 2009. The two vessels will also be prepared for service as construction vessels (CSV), and are prepared for installation of an A-frame and a large offshore crane.
