PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Network Rail has awarded three Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) contracts, col- lectively worth £55m.
Morgan Sindall will build a new £25m Haymarket station, Bam- Nuttall will carry out £27m of bridgeworks and Carillion will deliver £3m worth of track altera- tions.
These works form part of the £1bn EGIP scheme, which aims to electrify the railway to increase services and reduce journey times between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Construction will begin in 2012 to prepare for electrification works.
The new station at Haymarket will form an integrated hub with trains, trams, buses and taxis and involves refurbishing the sta- tion building, constructing a new concourse, a new access bridge with DDA-compliant lifts and es- calators to all platform levels and renewing platform canopies.
The bridgeworks involve the re- construction of 18 structures and the removal of two redundant bridges around the central belt. Track alterations will also com- mence in this area.
David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scot- land, said: “The investment an- nounced today will transform Haymarket, delivering a facility which will better serve customers and offer the city as a whole a sta- tion it can be proud of.
“The track and bridgeworks con- tracts we have awarded also mean
that preparations are well under way to deliver the electrification of rail lines in the central belt – which will cut journey times and increase capacity on key routes into Scot- land’s two biggest cities.”
Transport Minister Keith Brown added: “This £50m investment for the Haymarket Station Capacity Project and electrification takes us one step closer to revolution- ising the rail network in central Scotland.
“The Scottish Government is committed to bringing tangible benefits to passengers across the
country through projects such as EGIP, which will reduce journey times between Glasgow and Ed- inburgh and increase capacity. These works are a significant part of this and I look forward to wit- nessing the progress made.”
Steve Montgomery, managing director of ScotRail, said: “The expansion and redevelopment of Haymarket station is warmly wel- comed.
“We look forward to working with Network Rail to deliver a more mod- ern and welcoming station for fu- ture generations of rail customers.”
