Jon Sherred of The Quattro Group discusses the rail industry’s need for effective infrastructure support in areas like drainage and winter maintenance.


W


ith over 235 RRV machines, the Quattro Group provides an


estimated 30% of the UK rail sector’s operated RRV market. As well as providing renewal equipment on term projects to Babcock and Balfour Beatty, the group maintains


long-term relationships


with Amey Colas on high-output work, Carillion and Colas on various project work, Serco and Cleshar on the Docklands Light Railway and recently renewed its relationship with Tubelines on London Underground.


However the Quattro Group doesn’t just do the ‘usual machines’. This nationwide organisation specialises in environmental and seasonal services too, providing the UK rail sector with cutting-edge equipment designed to help ensure that the nation’s railways are unaffected by the elements.


Drainage: We’ll keep the drains flowing, so you can keep the trains going.


The Quattro Group has dedicated an entire department to the maintenance of track- side drainage, and the attributed issues. As well as providing a key service in the cleaning, flushing and maintenance of rail drains, the department also provides a wrap-around service which also deals with the maintenance of track-side vegetation and the removal of vegetation debris caused by strong winds, heavy rains and changing seasons – one of the key causes of blocked drains.


With modern, custom-designed machines such as Multicar-mounted jetters and powerful gully suckers, designed to flush and remove blockages in drains, as well as key attachments for core machines used to deal with the cutting and removal of track- side vegetation, the Quattro Group can not only clear blockages but also provide preventative maintenance.


Winter Maintenance: Stopping at nothing to keep you moving.


Winter service research and development is a key element of The Quattro Group’s asset management programme, and the winter maintenance division works closely with some of the biggest names in winter services equipment manufacture.


The modern fleet includes a number of utility vehicles, including a number of


highly versatile Multicar vehicles, all of which are subject to a rolling maintenance programme. This ongoing programme, alongside a highly trained team of fitters who are on call 24/7, helps make sure that a Quattro Group vehicle is guaranteed to be on the road and ready for action whatever the weather. Working alongside the carrier vehicles, the Quattro Group has a huge variety of attachments and handheld equipment ready to take on any task.


The fleet includes Giletta Spreader Attachments to help ensure swift and comprehensive gritting is possible in even the harshest conditions, Fiedler Snow Ploughs, which are able to tackle the heaviest snowfall, and Tracmaster Snow Clearance equipment, designed to clear snow from platforms, pathways and pedestrian areas.


Whilst undoubtedly not as glamorous as building a new high-speed track or ground-breaking station, it is the core considerations such as drainage and the ongoing seasonal maintenance of the UK’s rail network that keep the nation’s infrastructure running.


The damage that the elements could cause to our tracks, platforms, station buildings and ultimately the service we provide as an industry is undeniable, and as such must be given proper consideration. The weather isn’t going to let up, but at the Quattro Group we are ready to help ensure that extreme conditions need not cause the country to grind to a halt!
