devices is no longer relevant.

These efficiency improvements are being achieved because Toughbooks allow work processes to be completely re-designed, al- lowing maintenance staff to be more pro- ductive.

Documents and drawings can be accessed anywhere, integrated GPS allows staff to be routed efficiently and assets located, inte- grated cameras can record asset condition immediately and staff can access stock and tool information in real time using Tough- book’s powerful wireless connectivity.

Toughbooks for rail workers

There are a range of Toughbook devices to meet the needs of all mobile, outdoor workers but three devices stand out for those in the rail industry, the Ultra-mobile CF-U1, the CF-H2 Field and the recently announced Toughpad FZ-A1.

Reliability and durability

Even the smallest machines meet the challenges of field working in the rail sec- tor. Take the Toughbook ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) CF-U1. At 1060 grams, the unit can withstand falls from 120cm and is IP65

Toughbooks’ hot-swappable battery design and a specially adapted power manage- ment system, allows Toughbook devices to work right alongside their operator for up to eight hours at a time from just a single battery charge. This type of long-lasting

power is essential for engineers when they are far from their nearest office.

Connectivity

compliant for dust and moisture resist- ance, meaning it can stand up to the harsh- est environments.

Portability and mobility

The rail network stretches the length and breadth of Britain, which means mobility is crucial. Small, mountable form factors and unique design features such as the in- tegrated carry handle of the CF-H2 Field mean Toughbooks can go wherever you need them to.

No power access

The integrated WLAN module and optional HSPA make it possible to do tasks such as capturing and sending digital images even when working in challenging outdoor con- ditions. This means data can be captured more quickly and more accurately and dis- patched back to the office all in one easy process.

With the recently announced Toughpad FZ-A1, Panasonic is now able to bring all the benefits of an Android tablet to the rail industry, with its ergonomic design and user-driven applications but with the rug- gedness expected of a Toughbook.

The challenges facing the rail industry over the coming years may not get easier but with Panasonic Toughbooks field engineers and technicians will have the benefit of spe- cialised technology to help them achieve their goals.
