“I didn’t just dip my toe in the water when I set out, I jumped in at the deep end’
Some may question Gareth’s ‘try anything’ approach to jobs but he feels this is an essential mindset for any photographer who, like him, is in the early stages of their career. “At the moment it’s all about survival,” he says.
“It would be great to say that I just have one style and everyone books me for that style, but once you have photography as a business, you have to be flexible. I didn’t just dip my toe in the water when I set out, I jumped in at the deep end and made photography my full-time job.”

Looking at the shots on these pages, you might think that Gareth is doing himself a disservice suggesting he’s a photographic Jack-of-all-trades. His compositions are stylish, challenging and eye-catching in equal measure. When pushed, he does admit that many of his shots have a cinematic quality to them, but again this is born out of market dynamics as much as personal preference. “Photography has changed from when I first started taking pictures at college with a medium-format camera,” he suggests. “It’s now about creating the ultimate image,
which inevitably includes Photoshop work. I make sure that I’ve got a great image to start with, but then you get creative and get the feel that the client really wants in post-production.”
Ah, the dreaded post-production - consumer of vast amounts of time in pursuit of the aforementioned ultimate image, a fact that Gareth is all too familiar with. “I have been known to spend 48 hours on a single image,” he admits, “That’s when it’s important to have people that you trust around you to give an opinion on your work.”
