for sixmonths and Iwas on the beachwhen I heard someone shoutmy name,” he recalls. “Incredibly, itwas a friend fromEngland.He needed some pictures taking for a potential modelling job and he asked me if I could do them. I only had a basic Fuji bridge camera at the time, but I did the shots all the same.”


T They were good; his friend got the job.


Today, in the slightly less glamorous surroundings of his Portsmouth hometown, Gareth is busy forging himself a successful photographic career, or what he prefers to call his ‘journey’. He’s travelled a long way - literally and metaphorically - from his chance encounter on the other side of the world and can now boast a diverse client list that includes recording artists, interior designers and a round-the-world yachtsman. Oh yes, and The Kennel Club. “I never really wanted to photograph dogs,” he admits, “but if you’re good at a trade, you should be able to turn your hand to anything. You’ve got to be willing to take on, within reason, certain jobs that you never thought you would do. Photography is an adventure, you can’t go into it with preconceived ideas, you have to go with the flow.”
