Remember, don't get to up-tight about these effects, just be aware that they exist and play around with them until you're comfortable with what you can achieve with the equipment you have available. Get your workspace or studio as dark as possible and use the modelling light on your Bowens heads to help shape the face. When you've

set-up the light, stand next to the camera and see how the light falls onto the subject's face. Remember, the tighter the modifier / light source you use, the less scope for movement your subject has before the light and face shape will change.

Building the light

Once you've got to grips with the above lighting set-ups, it's a great idea to start utilising reflectors, fill lights and hair lights to lift the shadows and create different effects. Simply utilising a white polyboard or a Bowens gold/silver disc reflector can make a massive impact on the finished image.

Reflectors

Lifting the shadows makes the light much softer and more forgiving to your subject. Reflectors are a very good cost effective and portable alternative to a second light; however, you will not have the same amount of control or coverage as when using a fill light.

Fill light

Obviously, a second light is much less portable and more expansive, but it will allow you increase and decrease the amount of fill light to more finely control the shadow detail in the image, plus you can begin to add or change the reflectors and modifiers to achieve different effects.
