uplifting. We think this shot fromAdrian Samson’s
‘Awakening’ series fulfils both criteria. Obviously the image instantly brought to mind author Frank Wilczek’s book, The Lightness of Being; - which I am sure all our
readers will have found
unputdownable as a masterful study of fundamental physics. As you know only too well it’s a tome about the ancient contrast between celestial light and earthy matter. Well we do know Adrian thinks his Bowens lights are pretty
heavenly...so we can clearly see the link. There again, the shot might have reminded you of Milan Kundera’s; The Unbearable Lightness of Being – which explores the artistic and intellectual life of Czech society during the Communist era. The book challenges Nietzsche’s concept of eternal recurrence (the universe and its events have already occurred and will recur as infinitum). The story suggests an alternative; that each person has only one life to live and everything that occurs in that life will only happen once and never again – thus ‘the ‘lightness’ of being’. There. We thought it needed to be explained. Or of course it could be that it’s just an excellent image. All ideas about the lightness of being to me on a postcard please. You might get a reply - or there again I might keep writing to you ad infinitum.
