Two years ago, my oven was placed on the Endangered Appliances List—I discovered that I could live without this staple of the American Kitchen. I admit that this discovery was made under duress. I was a lonely mama in a new town, craving more company than that of my delightfully demanding toddler and breastmilk- addicted newborn. Enter Kristen, mother of four and domestic

diva extraordinaire. Sweeping into my social vacuum like a balmy breeze, Kristen men- tioned that she was starting a Raw Food Supper Club. I pounced on her offer without a second

thought—aſter all, I could whip up a salad with the best of them. Little did I know that our club’s raw-food repertoire would grow to include much more than salads. Kristen rounded up a few more ladies, raw-

food novices all, and we decided to meet once a month—we were all pregnant or nursing, so plenty of babies became honorary members as well. Knives and food processors became our kitchen tools of first resort as our ovens sat idle. Moving beyond the basic tools of raw cuisine, Natalie, our most zealous convert, even bought a dehydrator.
