Perhaps best of all, Ethan and I got the satisfaction of working—together with old friends while making some new ones—on an important shared task, and of experienc- ing all the sweaty teamwork of a barn raising. Tat’s the community part of community gardening. On a day in late August, the first hint of

fall in the air, Ethan sat on his favorite dirt pile and bit into the last unwashed lemon cucumber of the season with a snap. “Let’s plant these in next year’s garden,” he said.
