the author describes the deep and beautiful celebration of her daughter’s fi rst menarche, and I am crying. Nestled in bed with a bad cold while the rest of my family is skiing for the day, I am suddenly and powerfully in touch with the grief I feel for my own relationship to my body. Yes, I remember when I fi rst got my period: A teacher at school asked me if I’d sat on something because of the dark stain on my skirt, and when my mother tried to talk with me, I ran sobbing into my room and locked the door. As long as I can remember, I have been profoundly, uncontrollably embarrassed to have a human body, and hiding this has taken more energy than I care to acknowledge. What if I had gotten the messages, the celebrations, the space for nesting that Miranda was gifted with? How diff erent my own relationship to my body might be now. How much better prepared I would feel to speak honestly with my 16-year-old foster daughter about her sexual choices.

Evarts’s words moved me to tears. I didn’t have a wonderful experience coming into womanhood. I was told, “Here is what you use, and you can have a gift” (a sweatshirt from Rite-Aid). There was no talking about how I felt; my stepmother was not a warm person to me, and my mother was not around much. No one talked about sex or womanhood or feelings; becoming a woman was very con- fusing and diffi cult. Evarts’s words made me sad, and envious of and excited for her daughters. I will share this article with every mom I know who has daughters, in the hopes that they will cel- ebrate with their children (and maybe invite me to their special party).

It took me three tries to read “Maiden’s Moon”—not because it was dull or boring, but because I was crying too hard to read! I was so touched by the heartfelt and empow- ering rituals Evarts and her daughters created for their most sacred passage into woman- hood. I thought it was so wonderful that each woman at the celebration shared her own

“moon” story. How much we can learn from our elders! The message is clear that we must bring the strength and beauty back into our moon cycle, and not ever feel ashamed about it again. I so look forward to helping create a Red Party for my own daughter someday.

I love the article on cloth pads in the March– April 2010 issue. I have been using them for years, and not only do I love them, my fl ow has lightened considerably since getting rid of chemical- and bleach-fi lled disposables!

I have to say I loved loved loved this latest issue of Mothering. I am saving it to keep the article

“Your Kitchen Medicine Cabinet,” by Cynthia Lair. But I noticed that one remedy I use all the time is missing from the piece: fenugreek seeds. Many readers of Mothering probably know about taking fenugreek to boost milk supply. But my husband is from Africa, and he has taught me that it is a remedy for stomach upsets as well.
