This picture was taken by my friend Jenna’s seven-year-old son, Michael, while we were visiting the botanical gardens in Anchor- age, Alaska. At 20, Jenna (right) gave birth to Michael at home and breastfed him until he was almost four. Seeing this picture reminds me of how much I have learned about being a mom from my best friend. It’s been two years since this photo was taken, and my son, Ahwrey, and Jenna’s daughter, Wraye (both pictured at age two), are still just as happy about nursing as they were then.

Your article “The Scent of a Woman,” by Julia Ewaschuk (January–February 2010), touched on a few interesting points, the fi rst of which is how bathing an infant immediately after birth can hinder bonding. When I had my son, I opted not to bathe him for more than a few days in order to let his skin absorb the vernix [the waxy white substance that covers newborns]. It was a powerful bonding experi- ence for me. I was quite happy to learn how not bath-
ing a newborn allows for the transference of the scent of the amniotic fl uid to the breast. I also loved the article’s inclusion of how a woman smells her baby’s head. I think nearly all mothers would feel warm inside at just the mention of it.

I want to thank you for the wonderful article on newborn bonding. As a health communi- cator specializing in family and community health, I am grateful for the article showing the value and ease of early mother-baby bonding. Mothers feel better about being mothers; babies benefi t from happier, healthier mothers; and communities benefi t from stronger families. It is win-win. I was sad to see one grievous mistake.
